Bridge to Silence (1989) TV Movie

Bridge To Silence Collapses Under Weight Of Formulaic Plot
April 07, 1989|By Clifford Terry, Television critic.

Bridge to Silence, which airs at 8 p.m. Sunday on CBS-Ch. 2, is still another made-for-TV movie that starts out with a domestic scene so idyllic - Mom, Dad and 5-year-old daughter merrily singing at the outset of a long automobile trip that the viewer knows that tragedy is certain to strike.

Sure enough, a drunk driver crashes into the car, killing the father - a teacher at Washington`s Gallaudet University - and seriously injuring his wife, Peggy Lawrence (Marlee Matlin), a hearing-impaired actress.

As she slowly recuperates, and her parents take care of her child (Allison Silva), old wounds are opened between Peggy's manipulative, guilt-ridden mother, Marge (Lee Remick), who has never been able to fully deal with her daughter's having lost her hearing through spinal meningitis years before.

When the auto accident victim becomes increasingly despondent, a longtime friend and stage director (Michael O'Keefe of "The Great Santini") convinces her to return to Michigan's Theater of the Deaf as a form of therapy. The production just happens to be "The Glass Menagerie" (which, in case you haven't picked up on it, is also about fragility).

Meanwhile, Marge is convinced that Peggy has become emotionally unstable and initiates proceedings to obtain legal guardianship of the 5-year-old - an action vehemently opposed by her usually mild-mannered husband (Josef Sommer). Inevitably, as Peggy works through her grief, she and her mother confront one another in a climactic scene that leads to several tidying-up epiphanies. "You never accepted me as I am," says the daughter. "I learned to speak for you, but you never learned to sign for me. I'm deaf, but you're the one that can't hear." After which Marge confesses, "I could never love you, because I hated me."

Despite the fine cast, headed by Matlin - the Academy Award winner (Children of a Lesser God) who appears here in her first speaking role- "Bridge to Silence" is disappointingly formulaic and derivative, blending favorite movie-of-the-week elements: personal trauma and parent-child friction.

Karen Arthur directed, from a script by Louise Burns-Bisogno.

Filmed in Toronto, this drama premiered February 8, 1998 on ABC. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Beach Boys, The: An American Family (2000) TV Movie

Dramatization of the early years, from their formation in the early 1960s to their peak of popularity as musical innovators, through their late-60s decline (and Brian Wilson's beginning battle with mental illness), to their re-emergence in 1974 as a nostalgia and "goodtime" act.

The movie was shown in two parts on ABC Television, and featured a good deal of original studio and session material by the band, which forms the backdrop to the story. Music that couldn't be licensed for the production, but was important to the story (such as the Smile album sessions, and music by criminal Charles Manson, who had collaborated with Dennis Wilson), was filled in with sound-alikes, reminiscent of the original recordings.

Mayor of Hollywood, The: Johnny Grant's 50th Anniversary in Show Business (1990) TV Special

Equal parts documentary, biography, anniversary show and tome this two hour title is beyond rare, it's non-existent. No information of any kind can be found regarding this title and that is unfortunate since it is far and away the most important offering in this archive. A tale of a simple man who went far using his gracious smile and winning personality, nobody didn't love Johnny Grant. For five decades Johnny Grant was almost everywhere, openings, red carpets, anything Hollywood. One thing made apparent here is the behind the scenes work of Mr. Grant. One example, The Hollywood Christmas Parade. That was Johnny's idea and it's a tradition that lives on today. Thank you Johnny.

On a personal note, when I lived in Hollywood (just north of the boulevard) Johnny Grant was very visible. You could see him toddling around all the time and if you hollered to him, "Hey Johnny" he would always turn and greet you with a "Hi there... " or a "How are you today?" always graciously. When he passed in 2008 a BIG part of Hollywood went with him, this production does well to show his humanity in a packed 90+ minutes. Look for anyone who was alive at this time to make an appearance in this five decade tour of Hollywood with all the trappings.

Roots: Celebrating 25 Years (2002) TV Special

The power of 'Roots': Special celebrates 25th anniversary of landmark miniseries
Tuesday, January 15, 2002
By Monica L. Haynes, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

For eight consecutive nights in January 1977, millions of Americans watched the groundbreaking, history-making saga of an American family who did not come over on the Mayflower or pass through Ellis Island. "Roots," the story of Kunta Kinte, a West African enslaved in the United States, and his descendants, captivated the American television audience as no other dramatic program had done before.

LeVar Burton, who starred as the young Kuntu Kinte in "Roots," says he "had no thought or expectation of what it would lead to." It was television at its best -- controversial, thought-provoking, entertaining and a ratings hit. At some time during the miniseries' eight nights, 130 million Americans watched "Roots," and the series went on to garner countless awards including nine Emmys and a Peabody.

Roe vs. Roe: Baptism by Fire (1998) TV Documentary

This is not only an excellent documentary it's also my absolute favorite title in the entire archive. Norma McCorvey is an American hero in the most unassuming way. Humble, fully disclosed and struggling, her person and her humanity has been tested and frankly, beaten. Still unshakeable in her Christian faith she has not only disavowed her alleged support of pro-abortion protest activities but she has also disavowed her homosexuality. She is one of my favorite persons on the planet and watching this makes me want to reach right through the TV and hug her warmly.

A new respect for one Gloria Allred. As a native of the southland she has always been a part of my adult life and it's rarely been a good part. Her actions here were also heroic if not unsung. In fact, I firmly believe the next time you hear about Ms. McCorvey in the popular media will be when she dies, hopefully many years from now.

Obviously to find out more on this topic refer to wikipedia but one thing I didn't see there is the answer to this question. Why was the name "Jane Roe" used instead of "Jane Doe" as might be expected?

Miss USA Pageant, The (2003) TV Special

The Miss USA 2003 pageant was held in San Antonio Municipal Auditorium, San Antonio, Texas March 24, 2003, the first time it had been held in this state since 1996 when the pageant was held in South Padre Island. It was the latest it had been held since 1986, as previous pageants had been held in February or early March.

The pageant was won by Susie Castillo of Massachusetts, who was crowned by outgoing queen Shauntay Hinton of the District of Columbia.

The format reverted to a Top Ten who competed in swimsuit and evening gown, although, as with 2002, there was no interview competition for the semi-finalists. This would be the last year where a top ten was called. The following Miss Universe Organization pageant, Miss Universe 2003 and onward, fifteen semi-finalists have been called each year.

Daisy Fuentes co-hosted the event for the first time (although she had been a color commentator in 1995), joined by Billy Bush who would also host the 2004 and 2005 events, as well as the Miss Universe pageants all three years. Color commentary was added by reigning Miss USA Shauntay Hinton. Entertainment was provided by Burn The Floor.

Miss Teen USA Pageant, The (2003) TV Special

Miss Teen USA 2003, the 21st Miss Teen USA pageant, was televised live from Palm Springs on 12 August 2003. At the conclusion of the final competition, Miss Oregon Teen USA Tami Farrell was crowned by outgoing queen Vanessa Semrow of Wisconsin.

Prior to the live telecast, the 51 contestants competed in a preliminary presentation show where they were judged in swimsuits and evening gowns. Scores from this judging determined the top 15 for the final competition.

This was the first year that the pageant was held in Palm Springs, which would later host Miss Teen USA 2004 and Miss Teen USA 2006. The pageant location was announced on 17 July 2003.

On 23 July 2003 it was announced that Jessica Simpson and Justin Guarini would appear as musical guests during the pageant. The event was hosted by Mario Lopez and Brooke Burns.

Farrell was the third titleholder from Oregon, the only state to win more than one Miss Teen USA title, other than Tennessee (who won in 2009) and their 1997 win.

It's awful how the big three lost their way during the first decade of the new millenium. Here is some solid proof in the form of nonsense from the folks at ABC.
