Quiet Victory: The Charlie Wedemeyer Story (1988) TV Movie

This is the true story of Los Gatos (California) high school football coach Charlie Wedemeyer (Michael Nouri). At 31, onetime football pro Wedemeyer is living the American dream; a winning team, a happy marriage and public adulation. Then in 1977, Charlie is diagnosed as suffering from ALS, a degenerative neurological ailment better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Given only one year to live, Charlie determines to continue leading his Los Gatos Wildcats to a state championship -- which he eventually does, despite losing all powers of speech and movement. Several notches above the usual "disease of the week" TV movie, Quiet Victory: The Charlie Wedemeyer Story was directed by ROY CAMPANELLA II -- himself the son of a physically disabled pro athlete, baseball star Roy Campanella. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Last Dance, The (2000) TV Movie

This is a piece of a "Variety" magazine review from the day. "If CBS hopes to lose their image as an elder-skewing net, then the Eye is stuck in reverse in the demo derby. "The Last Dance," a warmhearted tale of a Latin teacher who grows old and reconnects with one of her students to teach him life's most valuable lessons, would be fine fodder from the Hallmark folks but even sedentary auds can only take so much schmaltz in primetime." With that said, this is a pleasant little TV movie that tugs at the tear glands. Especially if you're one who is susceptible to tales of time travel and lost loves.

Island Son (1989) TV series 1989-1990

Island Son marked the return to regular weekly series television of Richard Chamberlain, who had not so appeared since his Dr. Kildare  series almost 25 years earlier. In the interim he had enjoyed a somewhat successful career in feature films, and had become widely known as "The King of the Miniseries" due to his success in that format.

Chamberlain once again portrayed a dedicated medical doctor, Dr. Daniel Kulani. Kulani was born in Hawaii and practiced on the mainland for many years prior to his return to work at the fictional Kamehameha Medical Center in Honolulu. Kulani's complicated life involved his stressful work environment; his adoptive parents, Tutu and Nana; his 18-year-old son, Sam; and his love interest, high school drama teacher Nina Delaney. Dr. Kulani's complicated life was never resolved to the satisfaction of the viewers because the program was canceled in March 1990.
