South Bank Show, The (1978) TV series 1978-2009

A television arts magazine show, originally made by London Weekend Television (now part of ITV Studios), presented by Melvyn Bragg, broadcast on ITV1 and seen in over 60 countries worldwide — including Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Sweden and the USA. Its stated aim was to bring both high art and popular culture to a mass audience.

In May 2009, ITV announced that the show was to come to an end. Although it was originally reported that the show was ending due to Bragg's retirement, Bragg later made it clear that he decided to leave after they ended the show, and thought ending it was a mistake; according to him, "they've killed the show, so I thought, I'll go as well."

On Monday 28 December 2009 the final edition was broadcast featuring The Royal Shakespeare Company as its subject. Melvyn Bragg announced on this programme, after the final South Bank Show Awards in January 2010, there would be a series of ten 'South Bank Show Revisited' programmes transmitted in early 2010 featuring updates on previous South Bank Show subjects.

Man of the People (1991) TV series

Meet Jim Doyle. He's got all the qualifications to be a successful politician... And he's just been appointed City Councilman. He's a con man. He brings lots of "con" fidence to everything he does. He's a gambler. He likes a good race, especially if it's run by competitors with four legs. He's a hustler. Not necessarily one who'll make 12 campaign stops a day. Jim Doyle's a hustling politician who's been around the block...from the Pool Hall, all the way to City Hall. "If the race can't be won, fix it." - Jim Doyle In his time, Jim Doyle has done it all. Now, thanks to a bizarre turn of events, he's about to add City Councilman to a resumé that includes big-time pool player and "small-time grifter." Jim's past also included a failed marriage to a crusading city councilwoman who was beloved by the entire community. With her unexpected death, City Hall suddenly needed a suitable replacement. Someone with just the right background, which in political terms meant someone they could control. Jim Doyle seemed like the perfect choice, or so they thought. It turns out, Jim's been around enough unsavory characters to know when he's being hustled, and he's enough of a betting man to welcome a good challenge. So against his better instincts, and with the reluctant help of his ex-wife's loyal personal assistant, he accepts the position of City councilman. Almost instantly, he wins the people over, playing politics his own special way. In the weeks and months ahead it becomes increasingly apparent that whoever said "you can't beat City Hall" never met Jim Doyle. (NBC)

O. J. Simpson - Reading of the Verdict (1995)

Watch in awe as history is made. Would be funny if it wasn't so tragic. Not only is this the worst offering in all of television history, it's a depressing, demoralizing look into the utter depravity of the human soul. Watch the "Dream Team" and think about Robert Shapiro the next time you hear or see a LegalZoom commercial. Look at the WTF look on Kardashian's face. From wikipedia.com; "By the end of the criminal trial, national surveys showed dramatic differences between most blacks and most whites in terms of their assessment of Simpson's guilt." No kidding.

Ike: The War Years (1980) TV Movie

Five Emmy nominations were bestowed upon the TV miniseries Ike, which first aired May 3, 4, and 6, 1979. Later, these three two-hour installments were boiled down to two and retitled Ike: The War Years. Robert Duvall stars as General Dwight D. Eisenhower, with Lee Remick co-starring as Kay Summersby, his official driver, confidante, and (it has been said) lover. Part Two of The War Years finds Eisenhower, now the supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, dealing with political tangles involving Winston Churchill (Wesley Pitney) and General DeGaulle (Vernon Dobtcheff). The film concludes with Eisenhower's supervision of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. Two directors were credited for Ike: The War Years Boris Sagal handled the scenes filmed in England, while Melville Shavelson helmed the scenes set in the US and North Africa. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
